I enjoyed this book, particularly the setting and depictions of 1854 China. I felt for Robert and his inner conflicts and would like to know more about his life after the events of this novel. (2007 1st edition)

“ a well researched book and gives us an peek into the life of the Chinese in the early 20th century. We learn a lot about their customs and traditions. I loved that part of the book.... The only thing that I could have done without was the excessive sexual content.... It is for this fact alone that I give this book only 2.5 stars.... Apart from that, I enjoyed reading the book."

"I felt I learned so much from this novel and I enjoyed every bit.

"There is *sexual content in this novel so if that isn't for you then you may want to skip this book.

"However, I think it is a part of this story in that it is a part of the cultureof China.
I didn't personally find the scenes overwhelming.
This was a really good novel for me and I was sorry to see it end. Truthfully I would have liked to learn more about how Robert's and Ayaou's lives evolved after the emotional ending of this story."
